VIVID DEFIANCE

MAY 19 – JUNE 13, 2026

Katharine Cosenza Butler’s exhibit of etchings, monoprints, and encaustic monotypes at Prince Street Gallery reflects Ms. Butler’s love of country and fierce concern for the steps that we have taken to imperil our world and the continuation of mankind.  From global warming to a world presently engaged in a senseless and horrifying pattern of greed and corruption, it is incumbent on each of us to resist, persist, and work to renew.

Vivid Defiance explores the tension between the fragility of life and the brutality of conflict. In a landscape often defined by the grey of the shadow of war, these works use the natural world as a manifesto of hope.

Flowers and vivid color are not merely subjects here; they are acts of resistance. By documenting growth where there should be desolation, this collection honors the persistence of color and the refusal of the earth to remain silent. It is a reminder that even in the darkest seasons, life finds a way to bloom with unyielding brilliance.

In this spirit Ms. Butler dedicates her exhibition to true leaders of peace and justice - those who are willing to take a stand and take action such as Pope Leo XIV,  Francesca Albanese, Thiago Avila and the Freedom Flotilla, Greta Thunberg, Bruce Springsteen and every citizen who is active in speaking out and voting for the survival of democracy.
